April Traffic & (Future) Income Report
I could be a grandma blogger by now, but I'm not I'm a new blogger. As I mentioned in last month's first ever report, I did everything I needed to do to start a blog in 2009. I did everything except hit "publish" on my first-ever post.
I let doubt creep in and I am determined not to repeat the same mistake. This time I have hit publish and I am embarking on this journey along with Jon. For 2018 we have set out to focus on building up our blog, our new You Tube channel, and our Instagram. It's no longer the heyday of blogging and it's definitely frustrating to know that building up a You Tube channel and Instagram account will take time, but we have dreams to grow and monetize these!
So can a blog still be profitable in 2018? What about YouTube and Insta? How long is the process? What goes into it all? Well, let's find out together. We'll post one of these reports at the end of every month.
It would make our day if openly discussing our numbers and our goals helps anyone move forward and hit "publish" on their idea or dream, so we will share this side of our journey with you.
Here's how the month of April went:
April Traffic Report
We just started the blog at the very beginning of the year. We're very encouraged to see that April was a month of growth. We didn't double our pageviews from last month but we grew from 3,707 to 6,340. March had been our best month yet, and now we can say that April is our best month and that's a big win for now! For now I would like to see us consistently have about 200 page views a day. Our daily traffic isn't consistent yet, and that's something we would like to work on in May. We would also like to aim to double our pageviews.
April was only the second month we were serious about Pinterest, and we're happy with the results so far. We asked last month if there would be interest in how we got started with Pinterest, and there was, so we'll dive into what we did in an upcoming post.
For now you can see that Social Media is the primary driver of our blog traffic. Of the 84% of traffic that Social drove, Pinterest accounted for 97%. In May we're going to continue to work hard on Pinterest and adjust for the new best practices. Pinterest says we are getting 255K monthly views. We'd like to see if we can boost that to 300K in May.
We would also like to get to work on boosting traffic from Google in May, so we'll be looking to tighten up SEO.
Last month our most popular blog article was The Pros and Cons of Motorized vs. Towable RVs. The pin did fairly well on Pinterest (thank you so much if you shared it!). This month, as you can see below, our most popular article was Part 1 of the 7 Lessons We Learned Our First Night in Our RV. We love the fact that post has gained some traction as it's one that we feel helps you get to know us better and for us, well we laugh about it now, and we also can see how far we've come in RV life.
We did fall short of posting 3 times a week on the blog as we had originally set out to do at the beginning of April. We did pretty consistently post on Monday. For May we'd like to keep up the Monday morning posts and increase to a second post per week. We also didn't finish the affiliate marketing course we signed up for. We plan on finishing it up in May.
A big goal for 2018 was to start our YouTube channel. We started it back in January. In March we had 169 subscribers and nearly 12,000 watch time minutes. March was our best month. Unfortunately, March still stands as our best month. April saw a tiny bit of growth to 199 subscribers and 5,466 watch time minutes. Our big goal is to reach the threshold for YT monetization which they changed to 4,000 watch time hours and 1,000 subscribers.
For now though we would like to improve consistency. We fell short of our goal of posting twice per week, but, on the bright side we did improve on this. We were getting videos out every 2 weeks and this month we did improve slightly to every 7-10 days. The goal for May will be to get a video out every 7 days.
We just started focusing on growing Instagram and for the month of April we saw the average growth rate of 100 followers per month. Because we would like to grow our Instagram account, we would like to grow a bit above average. In April we set out to post 5-7 times a week, with a stretch goal of 10-14 times. We posted 23 times in the month of April, about 5 times a week. For May, we plan on continuing to post 5 times a week with a goal of growing by more than the average 100 followers. On the bright side for us this month continued to see engagement above the average 3%-6%.
We look forward to the day that we can add the income component in to these reports! However, we did make $0.51. LOL It's a start!
Someday it will be just awesome to look back at these first reports. However, it's not someday yet! Please leave any words of encouragement you may have for us in the comments, and feel free to link to any blog traffic and income reports you're following along with that you find inspiring.
